10. What is Periodontal disease?
Periodontal disease is an infection that affects the tissues and bone that support the teeth. The mouth is filled with countless bacteria. Periodontal disease begins when certain bacterian plaque (the sticky, colorless film that constantly forms on the teeth and surfaces lining the mouth) produce toxins and enzymes that cause inflammation of the gums. The resulting inflammation, which may be painless, can damage the attachment of the gums and bone to the teeth causing periodontal pockets. Left untreated, periodontal disease eventually will lead to tooth loss. Recent research also confirms a link between periodontal diease and other health concerns such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease, stroke, bacterial pneumonia and increased risk during pergnancy.
11. How do I heal periodontal pockets, resulting from periodontal disease?
The bone loss that occurs during periodontal disease can not be regained, but you can stop it and prevent any further bone loss. Periodontal pocketing can be treated by a in-depth cleaning called Scaling and Root Planing (SRP.) SRP is a special type of cleaning done by a registered dental hygienist. This procedure removes plaque and tarter from beneath the gums on the root surfaces that causes the pocketing. Local anesthetic may be given to reduce discomfort. After SRP, frequent trips to the hygienist may be required to monitor healing.
