Dental Insurance FAQ

Topeka Smiles welcomes your insurance plan! The FAQ below addresses some of the most common questions we hear. Please take a few moments to read the FAQ, and then call us if you have any additional questions.

dental services
  • What dental insurance does Topeka Smiles accept?

The dentists at Topeka Smiles are preferred in-network providers for Blue Cross Blue Shield, United Concordia, and Delta Dental. We accept most forms of dental insurance as out-of-network providers.

As a courtesy, our front office will be happy to file your dental insurance claims.

  • Can I use my HSA or FSA to pay for dental services?

Nearly all dental services qualify for HSA or FSA funds. Some dental products (including prescription toothpastes and Sonicare toothbrushes) can be covered as well, but it would be best to check your plan benefits.

  • Why did my insurance company pay differently than what was estimated?

Your dental benefit from your insurance may vary for a number of reasons, such as:

    • You have already used some or all of the benefits available from your dental insurance.
    • Your insurance plan paid only a percentage of the fee charged.
    • The treatment you needed was not a covered benefit on your insurance plan.
    • You have not met your deductible.
    • You have not reached the end of your plan’s waiting period and are currently ineligible for coverage.
  • Why isn’t the recommended treatment a covered benefit?

Your dentist diagnoses and provides treatment based on your needs and on his/her professional judgment and not on the cost of that care. Some insurance plans exclude coverage for necessary treatment in order to reduce their costs. Your plan may not include this particular treatment or procedure, although your dentist deemed the treatment necessary.

  • How do I know what my payment portion will be if my insurance does not cover the entire fee?

We are happy to estimate your payment portion. Your payment portion will vary according to your individual plan, your maximum allowable coverage, and other factors. Ultimately, the patient portion is not known until we have received payment from your insurance company.

  • How long does it take for an insurance claim to be paid?

The time for a dental insurance company to process an insurance claim varies. If your insurance carrier does not pay as anticipated or tries to deny coverage for your treatment that should have been eligible for benefits, an appeal may be filed which can extend the time frame for reimbursement. If you feel that your insurance company is delaying payment, please feel free to contact them or report them to the Kansas insurance commissioner.

  • What if I still have questions about my insurance?

Our team will do its best to answer all of your insurance questions. Please keep in mind that there are many insurance plans available and that your employer chooses your plan and your benefits. If you believe your benefits are inadequate, you may want to discuss the matter with your plan administrator and explore appropriate alternatives.
